Big Weights for Sandusky LEWT

The Crown Battery, Sharpnack Chevrolet- Buick, Lake Erie Walleye Trail (LEWT) held their third event of 2011 on Saturday May 14th at Sandusky. The teams found better conditions than the first two LEWT events of 2011 and the weights at the scales showed it.

The father and son team of Mike and Bud Doornink from Pittsburg PA and Sioux Center IA, brought in a tournament limit of walleye weighing 42.81 lbs to take the top spot. Jerome Dorlack of Monroe MI and Paul Curmi of Wood Haven MI, brought 39.77 lbs to the scales to capture second place. Finishing third was the team of Jeff Lash of Massillon and Dan Palmer of Machesny Park IL, with 38.39 lbs. Rounding out the top 5 were Jay Gullet of Willard and Joe Nadzam of North Royalton with 34.81 lbs, and Randy Eyre of Toledo and Nick Meisner of Swanton with 34.41 lbs.

Charlie Robinson and Mike Zaborski took the Medina Plating Early Bird award as the top finishing team that signed up to fish all 4 LEWT events during the Early Bird sign up period. Dick Chicoine won the Sharpnack Chevrolet- Buick owner’s group contingency award. All anglers that have purchased a vehicle from Sharpnack in Willard are eligible for this contingency award at every event the WBSA is holding in 2011.

The top spot in the chase for the big fish money went to Doornink and Doornink with their 11.26 lb walleye. Mike Doornink commented “It was great to see my dad break his personal best walleye three times in the same day and finish off with the one over 11 lbs. That one is going on the wall for him.” Joe and Mary Whitten brought in a 10.5 lb walleye to take the second spot in the big fish pot.

In the race for the Team of the Year, Eyre and Meisner hold the lead with 390 points. Dorlack and Miller and Gullet and Geitgey are tied for second with 388 points. Rounding out the top five are Cline and Kitchen with 386, and Robinson and Zaborski with 384. It is still anyone’s race to win with the top ten being separated by only 18 points.

The teams brought a total of 109 fish to the scales that averaged 5.86 lbs. Most of the top teams fished the Starve Island area and pulled Reef Runner lures on long leads and with added weight to achieve greater depths.

A special thanks goes out to Anna Lester, who in addition to fishing the tournament also baked an unbelievable spread of cookies and snacks for all of the anglers to enjoy. There were nothing more than crumbs left at the end of the day.

The remaining 2010 LEWT schedule is:

Huron – Huron City Ramp – June 4th and 5th
