Tough Erie Bite for Second LEWT
The Crown Battery, Sharpnack Chevrolet, Buick and Pontiac Lake Erie Walleye Trail (LEWT) held their second event of 2011 on Saturday April 30th at Lakevue Marina. The teams found a tough bite with the lake being extremely dirty for the second straight 2011 LEWT event.
The team of Aaron Humbert of Republic and Dave Knieriemen of Fremont figured out how to get a tournament best 4 walleye’s in the boat that weighed 18.92 lbs to take the top spot. Finishing second with 3 fish for 10.92 lbs was Randy Eyre of Toledo and Nick Meisner of Swanton. Darik Warnke and Matt Kerscher of Stow brought one fish that weighed 9.57 lbs. Rounding out the top five were Jay Gullett of Wiilard and Scott Gietgey of Canton with 7.85 lbs and Rob Cline of Nova and Dennis Kitchen of Ashland with 7.83 lbs.
Humbert and Knieriemen took the Medina Plating Early Bird award as the top finishing team that signed up to fish all 4 LEWT events during the Early Bird sign up and the Sharpnack Chevrolet- Buick owner’s group contingency award. All anglers that have purchased a vehicle from Sharpnack in Willard are eligible for this contingency award at every event the WBSA is holding in 2011.
The top spot in the chase for the big fish money went to Warnke and Kerscher with their 9.57 lb walleye that was caught in the last 45 minutes in 20’ of water on the south side of Kelly’s Island. Gullett and Gietgey finished second with their 7.83 lb fish.
The teams brought a total of 21 fish to the scales that averaged 4.85 lbs. The fish were caught about 50-50 jigging and trolling. Skinned Pink Squirrel Reef Runners and other stick baits were used by the winners.
Accolades go out to Dick Chicoine and John Below, who gave up their afternoon of tournament fishing, to pull 3 anglers from the water after their boat had taken on water and capsized on Gull Shoal. After rescuing them the team even helped the unlucky anglers net some of their floating tackle while waiting on the coast guard to arrive.
The remaining 2010 LEWT schedule is:
Sandusky – Sandusky City Ramp – May 14th (Blow date May 15th)
Huron – Huron City Ramp – June 4th and 5th
