As we are stuck in this poor ice/no open water period keep in mind that on March 1 the new 2008 Ohio fishing licenses are required.  You can get them online at www.OhioDNR.com or go to your local Wal-Mart or bait shop.  Also keep in mind that from March 1 through the end of April the walleye limit drops to 4 per day.  On May 1 the limit returns to 6 fish per day and the size limit is always 15".

It really looks like we might not get any ice season at all this year.  In the last few days I've heard second hand that some brave anglers are pushing small aluminum boats off of the nearshore ice to get into the open water around Catawba.  There are guys that go out and do this every spring, but that would scare me to death.  Small boats are bad enough on Erie, the last thing that I would want to do is push one across ice to get out.  I know that they catch some big fish some years.  I haven't heard if it has been any good the last few days.

There is information on the WBSA front page about a party that they are having this Saturday near Vermilion.  If you're interested go to www.WBSA.us to check out the details.

About 1 week ago it looked like an ice season might develop, but then last weekend was in the 40's with rain and a front went through Tuesday night that brought wind gusts over 50 knots.  The wind surge was so strong from the west that at one point the Buffalo water level was nearly 14' higher than Toledo.  It takes a lot of energy to move that much water that far.  Even though it got cold again the ice is a mess now.  So much of it broke up, eroded, or just flat out melted that I wouldn't trust any of it.  I don't know whether or not we'll get an ice season at this point.  A week or two cold snap might give us a shot, especially if you have access to an air boat, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

The good news is that March might bring a lot of open water trolling or island area jigging.  Last year we had ice through most of March.  Of course if this wind continues to blow like it has since late October it won't matter how much open water there is in March.  We're way overdue for some calm winds.
