About 1 week ago it looked like an ice season might develop, but then last weekend was in the 40's with rain and a front went through Tuesday night that brought wind gusts over 50 knots. The wind surge was so strong from the west that at one point the Buffalo water level was nearly 14' higher than Toledo. It takes a lot of energy to move that much water that far. Even though it got cold again the ice is a mess now. So much of it broke up, eroded, or just flat out melted that I wouldn't trust any of it. I don't know whether or not we'll get an ice season at this point. A week or two cold snap might give us a shot, especially if you have access to an air boat, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
The good news is that March might bring a lot of open water trolling or island area jigging. Last year we had ice through most of March. Of course if this wind continues to blow like it has since late October it won't matter how much open water there is in March. We're way overdue for some calm winds.
