Now that the open water season is basically over for a few months it's the season to talk about fishing. Club meetings, boat shows and sports shows are all on the horizon. As Marc mentioned a few posts ago he and I will both be speaking at the Cleveland Boat Show in Angler's Alley. I'm scheduled for Saturday Jan. 17 and Wednesday Jan. 21. I have two time slots on both days and the full schedule of Angler's Alley speakers can be viewed here.
My first presentation of the season will be this coming Monday, Jan. 12 in Brunswick at the WBSA meeting. This is the club's first meeting in the Cleveland area. I'll be presenting our Division of Wildlife survey data, mostly focusing on the Lake Erie walleye population. I'm going to give an overview of the surveys and touch on the 2008 results, and I'll leave some time for questions hopefully without cutting too much into the other speakers' time. It should be a great meeting and there seems to be a lot of interest in a Cleveland-area venue. For full information and directions to the location see the WBSA home page (see the "Current Club info box" in the middle of the page).
Other than ice fishing, if the conditions allow and you're into that sort of thing, it's time to start working on your gear for the upcoming season. It's never too early to clean and check your reels, load up with new line if necessary, check the guides on your rods, and start making all the harnesses that you'll need so that you're not stumbling around the boat trying to tie them during a hot bite in 2 to 4' waves.
My muskie fishing addiction is getting the best of me. I started attempting to make big wooden muskie lures and that is dominating all my free time whenever I get a few minutes here and there. It's a lot of fun to play around with and will be very rewarding if they work. I can't wait to see the first 40+" muskie chase one of my home-made lures to the boat.
Stay warm and be careful driving around in this crappy weather.
