It looks like we're in the middle of a pretty good ice season up here on the big lake. This is the first time in my 6 years up here that we've had this much ice for this long. I haven't been giving ice reports because I don't want to send people out on ice that might not be safe. Remember that even though the ice is thick in most places it can still move around with shifting winds and there are still thin areas from current erosion. About a week ago it sounded like the bite was really good with numbers of fish being caught along with some real trophies. The last few days have been tough, maybe due to the blue sky high pressure that we've had.
I also wanted to mention that, as some of you have already noticed, my dad and I did not sign up for the WBSA LEWT tournaments this year. Thanks to all of you that have called me to make sure that everything is OK, and everything is OK for anyone else that wondered. We just simply decided to take it tournament by tournament this year and sign up closer to the events if we decide to fish them. I don't expect to fish them all, and I know that we might get shut out of them if we wait too long to sign up. This year I really want to do a little more muskie fishing when I get the chance, and I want to be a little more flexible with my schedule since I have two children under 2.5 years old now. It was a tough decision to not early-bird enter all the LEWT's this year. We've fished them all since the first tourney back in 2005. The competitive side of me didn't want to miss a single tourney. This certainly isn't any reflection on the LEWT or how it is run. We've fished the LEWT all of these years because we enjoy it so much and because of all the great people that are involved with it. I will be fishing a lot of LEWT tourneys for a lot of years to come. This year I hope to fish at least a few of them and other than that I'll make a few extra fun trips up to St. Clair for muskie or maybe north of the border to fish around Pelee for walleye. It will be hard to even look at the results for the tournaments that we miss. Most of all I'll miss catching up with everyone before and after the events. We've definitely learned more by fishing the tournaments than we've learned anywhere else.
