LEWT Anglers Produce Good Weights in Bad Weather

The Western Basin Sportfishing Association (WBSA) and Lake Erie Walleye Trail (LEWT) held the second event of the 2009 Starcraft Marine, Crown Battery LEWT tournament series Saturday May 9th at Lakevue Marina.  The Tom Sharpnack Ford event featured a full field of 50 teams.

The team of Jerome Dorlack of Monroe MI and Todd Miller of Toledo brought in 5 walleye weighing 27.26 lbs to capture the win.  The team pulled bottom bouncers and inline weights and harnesses behind boards between Mouse and Starve to catch their fish.  Finishing second was Tim Nowak of DeMotte IN & Don Uphold of Kouts IN with 26.84 lbs.  In third was the team of Jay Gullett and William Robinson of Willard with 23.86 lbs.  Rounding out the top five were Gary and Nicholas Zart of Hinckley with 22.32 lbs and Bob Dale of Peninsula and Howard Andexler of Aurora with 22.26 lbs.

In the race for the Cranberry Creek Marina Big Fish Award the team of Charlie Robinson of Perrysburg and Mike Zaborski of Sheffield Lake brought a fish weighing 9.7 lbs to the scales.  In addition to the $600 cash, Cranberry Creek Marina ramp pass and $100 gift certificate the team also received a free mount from Jims Taxidermy in Port Clinton.  Bob Hogue of Hubbard and Jim Myers of Warren took the runner up position with a walleye weighing 9.54 lbs.

In the race for the Team of the Year it is still wide open.  Dorlack and Miller sit at the top currently.  An interesting note is that not a single team managed to cash a check in both of the first two events.  This is going to lend itself to a very tight race for the entire year.  In addition to winning the title teams are fighting for the chance to earn a berth to the AIM Championship.

There were a total of 124 fish brought to the scales weighing an average of 4.33 lbs each.  Most of the top teams pulled spinners behind bouncers and inline weights north of Kelly’s Island.  Gold and Purples were commonly mentioned colors.  One check cashing team fished the same general area as the winners and were pulling Reef Runners.

The remaining 2009 schedule is as follows:

June 6 – Sandusky – City Ramp “Crown Battery LEWT” (Blow Date June 7)

June 27 – Geneva – “Migration Open” (Blow Date June 28 )

July 25 – Championship Sheffield Lake – Sheffield Lake City Ramp (Blow Date July 26)

“There are just a few spots left for the Sandusky Crown Battery tournament so anyone thinking about fishing that one will want to get signed up before it is too late” commented LEWT Tournament Director Matt Davis.  He continued “We are also currently taking applications for both divisions of the inaugural Gator Open Pro Am to be held in September and more info about that can be found on our website.”
