Close finish in first LEWT event of 2006
The Western Basin Sportfishing Association (WBSA) held the first
event of the Triton Boats/Evinrude E-TEC Lake Erie Walleye Trail
(LEWT) at Lakevue Marina Sunday April 2nd. After some tough weather
Friday night and most of Saturday the 34 teams that participated
were greeted with nice weather in the morning and coffee and donuts
provided by the local West Marine Store before take off.
The father and son team of Thomas Sibert of Castalia and Tom Sibert
of Sandusky brought 41.26 lbs to the scale to edge out the second
place finishers by just one tenth of a pound. This margin of victory
set a new LEWT record for closest finish. The win was the first for
the Siberts in the LEWT and was worth $1308. Finishing in second was
the team of Dan Gies of Sandusky and Kelly Buchenroth of Kenton with
a weight of 41.16 lbs. Rounding out the top 5 were John Ware of
Morrow and Ron Solinski of Lebanon with 39.18 lbs in 3rd, Robert
Burkholder of Sugarcreek and Marion Erb of Millersburg in 4th and
another father son team of Dave Hartman of Columbus Grove and Travis
Hartman of Bellevue in 5th place.
The chase for the Cranberry Creek Marina Big Fish award saw many
fish over 10 lbs come to the scale before Gies and Buchenroth
brought the 12 lb pig up that would win the award and also set a new
LEWT record. This fish proved to be very valuable to the team as it
was worth $500 cash, a free mount from Jims Taxidermy in Port
Clinton and a season ramp pass for Cranberry Creek Marina. Gies
stated “we were working about a 300 yard stretch of water and the
big fish came on a Pink Lemonade Deep Little Ripper by Reef Runner
25 foot behind the board”. Second place in the big fish chase with a
fish weighing 11.74 lbs that was worth $140 was the team of Brian
Thomas from Canton and Al Johnson of Hartville.
Most of the teams were fishing around the reef complex pulling Reef
Runner and other stickbaits. The most popular areas were Niagara
Reef, D can and E can while the winners fished even closer to shore
around F can. For the second year in a row one of the top teams
caught a majority of their fish around Clinton Reef. The color heard
most often was Pink Lemonade. Most of the teams also talked about
trolling in the 1.2 to 1.6 range and one of the keys to success
seemed to be that most of the fish were caught in the top 8 foot of
water. The teams brought a total of 81 fish to the scales for an
average weight of 5.84 lbs. In addition to paying out almost $4400
in money there were also over $1,500 in prizes handed out with the 2
night rental from D&D Rentals topping the list of prizes. A special
thanks goes out to Lakevue Marina for the use of their excellent
facilities and to West Marine for providing refreshments to everyone
at the weigh ins.
Openings still exist for the remainder of the LEWT schedule. The
next event will be held at LamberJacks on Turtle Creek and complete
info can be found at our website
